Easter 2018

Easter morning service was filled with flowers and beautiful music. The Cantata "Blessed Redeemer-a Musical For Easter" created by Dennis and Nan Allen was performed by the First Baptist Choir. The Choir is directed by Randy Johnson. Randy accompanied the choir on the piano with Frankie Williamson adding his percussion skills. Dr. John Eldridge was the narrator and sound and video were handled by Paul Powell and Caleb Reeves.

A new Easter tradition was also present. Our church has had a cross in the yard which has changed its vestment from purple, to black, and now to white. The white will stay up 40 days until the day of Ascension when the cross will come down. Inside the church was a cross which the children (with some assistance) decorated with flowers at the beginning of the Cantata. The children's sermon, delivered by Linda McMasters, was a lesson on the Legend of the Dogwood. After the service the cross was moved to the front of the church for those passing to enjoy. Thank you Sam and Shelia Williams for the beautiful cross.

Tenebrae Service 3-30-18

If you missed the Tenebrae Service at Sandy Branch on Good Friday you missed a meaningful and dramatic service. Rev. Marc Sanders gave the Welcome and provided the musical accompaniment. Some of the readers of the lessons were Rev. Tony Capehart, Kim Capehart, and Wayne Mabry, Deacon Board Chair for Sandy Branch.

The Rev. Jim Wall gave the Message for the evening. His message included a discussion of the Cup and the Biblical symbolism that the Cup holds. He also told us about the many things that were in the Cup that Jesus drank - including sin, separation, and darkness. Scripture readers then read the 8 Lessons - with a candle being extinguished at the end of each scripture reading and music for the first six lessons. Note the photograph of the candles when only the Christ Candles was still burning. As the candles were extinguished, the lights in the church were slowly turned off until only the Christ Candle was lighted. When the Christ Candle was extinguished the church was dark and after a period of silence - a lone bell began to toll. The Christ Candle was then relighted, the church lights turned back on, and everyone departed in strict silence........filled with the lesson of the sacrifice and suffering our Christ endured for us.

Our Children Prepare for Easter by Sharing the Joy!

On Sunday, March 18, some of our children, led by Children's Worker Jessica Fields, prepared gift bags for some of our shut-ins and delivered them.  You can see by Mildred and Jack's smiles that they totally enjoyed the visit and the bag of gifts.  The bags included a special, original work of art, a box of homemade cookies, and a He Is Risen devotional booklet.  If you want your children to join in giving activities please contact Jessica or the church office for more information.
